Dr. Thuy Dieu Nguyen is a Searle Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She holds a PhD in Economics from Maastricht University (2016), an MPA from Indiana University (2012), and a BA in Finance from National Economics University, Vietnam (2008). As founder and director of the Michigan-Substance Use Policy and Economic Research Network, her work focuses on opioid epidemic policies, insurance barriers to treatment, and clinician prescribing behaviors. She leads NIH-funded projects investigating MOUD access and surgical impacts on treatment retention.
Her research spans opioid policy analysis, including cost-sharing effects on naloxone access, supply-side prescription restrictions, and pandemic-related disruptions in healthcare workforce. Dr. Nguyen’s findings have informed high-impact journals like the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA. She is a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, American Economic Association, and Academy Health.
Key grants include NIDA R01 awards studying insurance barriers to MOUD and perioperative MOUD management. Her work highlights policy trade-offs in opioid regulation and clinician incentives, with a focus on equity and evidence-based solutions. Dr. Nguyen also leads studies on healthcare workforce trends post-pandemic, revealing disparities in recovery across sectors like behavioral health.
