Thorsten Reemtsma

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Reemtsma is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Leipzig and Head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig. His research focuses on developing analytical methods for environmental pollutants, trace analysis of organic compounds, and understanding chemical behavior in natural and engineered systems. He holds leadership roles in multiple EU and national projects, including Proxies of the Eco-exposome and SafePol.

Education includes a Ph.D. (1994, TU Berlin) and Habilitation (2002, TU Berlin) in Environmental Chemistry. He has authored over 400 publications, with recent work addressing tire/road wear particles, PFAS, and microplastics. His team collaborates internationally on environmental analytics and policy-relevant studies.

Research interests span analytical chemistry innovations, pollutant transformation, and environmental risk assessment. Key achievements include advancements in mass spectrometry applications and insights into chemical mobility in water cycles.
