Thorsten Hüffer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Geosciences, specializing in environmental chemistry and pollution control. His research focuses on microplastics, organic contaminants, and sustainable environmental solutions. He is affiliated with the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science and the Center for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU). He holds memberships in the German Chemistry Society (GDCh) and the Water Chemistry Society.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing environmental sustainability. Key research areas include the environmental impact of tire-derived compounds, phthalates, and biochar applications. Recent studies highlight the toxicity of pollutants under heatwave conditions and exposure risks from climbing shoe additives.
Dr. Hüffer has received notable awards, including the Paul-Crutzen-Preis 2014 and the Preis der Wasserchemischen Gesellschaft 2021. He actively participates in academic activities, delivering invited talks on topics like microplastics and public health. His current project, 'Innovative sediment management framework for a SUstainNable DANube black SEa system (SUNDANSE)', addresses sustainable sediment management in the Danube-Black Sea region.
