Thor Stolen serves as an Associate Professor and Director of the Initial Licensure in Special Education Program at Alverno College. His prior academic appointments include teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and Milwaukee Public Schools.
Stolen's educational qualifications are:
- Bachelor of Arts in Communications, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee
- Master of Arts in Special Education, Cardinal Stritch College
- PhD in Exceptional Education, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee
His research expertise lies in special education with a focus on urban environments. He is particularly interested in hands-on learning experiences in natural settings for urban students and the educational experiences of marginalized children. Additional research areas include bilingual and culturally inclusive education, urban education, and designing learning environments for students across a wide spectrum of disabilities.
Stolen holds certification as a bilingual cross-categorical 6-12 special education teacher through Milwaukee Public Schools and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. He also contributes to the community as an advisory board member for Riverwest Educational Adventures, Inc., and previously served as a boat building instructor with All Hands Boatworks.
