Dr. Thomas van Huizen is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University School of Economics (USE) within the Applied Economics department. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance at Utrecht University and contributes to the university's strategic themes Dynamics of Youth (DoY) and Institutions for Open Societies (IOS).
Dr. van Huizen's research focuses on applied microeconomics with special interest in education, labor and public policy. His work primarily examines the nature, causes and consequences of inequalities in children's human capital, with a central question of how child care, preschool and education can contribute to more equal opportunities. He is currently the principal investigator of the multidisciplinary project EVENING (2019-2026), a large-scale impact evaluation of a nationwide expansion of the Dutch preschool education program for disadvantaged children.
His publication record shows consistent contributions to leading academic journals including Labour Economics, Economics of Education Review, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, European Sociological Review, Social Science Review and Child Development. His research spans child development economics, educational policy, labor market behavior, and early childhood interventions, with a growing emphasis on policy evaluation and social mobility.
