Dr. Thomas W. Cutrer is an Emeritus Professor of History from Arizona State University and current Guest Instructor of History at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Specializing in 19th-century American military history, his research focuses on the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the Civil War, Confederate leadership, and the Mexican-American War. Cutrer's scholarship combines operational military history with social history approaches.
Publications include comprehensive studies of the Civil War west of the Mississippi, biographical works on figures like Ben McCulloch, and edited collections of primary sources including soldiers' letters and diaries. Recent work includes studies of the First Oregon Cavalry Regiment and Hood's Texas Brigade.
Editorial projects demonstrate commitment to preserving primary sources through documentary editions of Civil War correspondence. Encyclopedic contributions span Oxford Companion to American Military History and American National Biography.
