Thomas Van Boeckel is a spatial epidemiologist and Assistant Professor currently affiliated with the One Health Institute at the University of Zürich. Previously, he served as an SNF Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich from 2019 to present, following postdoctoral work at ETH Zurich (2015-2019) and Princeton University as a Fulbright Research Fellow (2013-2015). He completed his PhD at the Free University of Brussels (2009-2013) with additional academic experience at Oxford University.
His research focuses on antimicrobial resistance at the human-animal interface, with particular expertise in spatial epidemiology and disease mapping. Van Boeckel's work bridges scientific research and policy development, aiming to accelerate international responses to antimicrobial resistance through innovative data collection platforms and geospatial analysis of drug-resistant pathogens in animals. His research also explores economic interventions like taxation to optimize antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on global antimicrobial resistance patterns, with particular attention to food-producing animals, aquaculture, and the human-animal interface. His work combines genomic epidemiology, geospatial modeling, and policy analysis to address the complex challenge of antimicrobial resistance from a One Health perspective.
His scientific honors include the Fulbright Award in 2013. His research has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, The Branco Weiss Foundation, and the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance.
Van Boeckel has mentored numerous researchers who have gone on to successful careers in academia, public health, and industry. His former team members include Cheng Zhao (postdoctoral fellow at University of Sydney), Laura Huber (assistant professor at Auburn University), and Joao do Couto Pires (EUPHEM fellow at Norwegian Institute of Public Health).
He leads the Epidemiology and Geography Group, which develops innovative approaches to mapping antimicrobial resistance and creating open-access resources like resistancebank.org, an online repository for animal point prevalence surveys on antimicrobial resistance.
