Thomas Thomson

Thomas Thomson is Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Manchester, where he heads the Nano Engineering and Storage Technologies Research Group and serves as Chair of the management board of the Graphene NOWNANO Centre for Doctoral Training. With extensive industry experience from IBM Almaden Research Center and Hitachi San Jose Research Center in Silicon Valley, he brings significant practical expertise to his academic role.

His research interests focus on developing novel perpendicular anisotropy, nanostructured exchange spring thin films for data storage and spintronics. He explores the interaction of hybrid magnetic films with in-plane and perpendicular anisotropy, magnetic thin film multilayers with temperature dependence (particularly FePt/FeRh/FePt structures), electrical measurements of magnetic properties using mesoscale Hall devices, and magnetism in graphene and other 2D materials for spintronic applications.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on spintronics, graphene applications, and advanced magnetic materials, showing continued research activity through 2025. His work has significant implications for next-generation data storage technologies and spintronic devices.
