معرفی
Thomas Shea is a Professor and Director at the Kennedy College of Sciences, University of Massachusetts Lowell, within the Department of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on neurodegenerative mechanisms, particularly Alzheimer's disease and ALS, examining roles of cytoskeletal proteins, oxidative stress, and nutritional interventions. He collaborates globally and mentors undergraduate/graduate students.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biology, Northeastern University (1983)
- M.S. in Biology, University of Massachusetts Boston (1979)
- B.A. in Biology, University of Massachusetts Boston (1974)
Shea's research explores axonal cytoskeleton dynamics, tau pathology, and nutraceutical efficacy against cognitive decline. His lab uses neuronal cultures and transgenic models to study interactions between genetics, diet, and environmental stressors in neurodegeneration. Key interests include neurofilament transport regulation, synaptic signaling anomalies, and antioxidant therapies.
His recent articles emphasize neuronal network behaviors, tau-induced cytoskeletal disruptions, and omega fatty acids' impact on neuropathology. Trends include mechanistic insights into protein aggregation, synaptic dysfunction, and nutritional modulation of disease progression.
Scientific Awards:
- Departmental Teaching Award (2010)
- Excellence in Research Award (1991)
- William F. Milton Fund Award (1991)
- Charles A. King Trust Fellowship (1987)
Shea actively advises students and secures grants for neurodegenerative research. His lab investigates neuronal repair mechanisms and collaborative projects with robotics for modeling learning.
