Thomas Schäfer is the Wesley O. Doggett Distinguished Professor of Physics at North Carolina State University (NCSU), affiliated with the College of Sciences and Department of Physics. He holds a PhD from the University of Regensburg (1992) and has held postdoctoral positions at SUNY Stony Brook and the National Institute for Nuclear Theory. He became a full professor at NCSU in 2006 after prior roles at Stony Brook and the RIKEN-BNL Research Center.
His research focuses on Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), extremal matter conditions, and topological objects like instantons. Key areas include high-temperature quark-gluon plasmas, dense quark matter in neutron stars, and effective field theories. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with computational simulations.
Recent publications (2021–2025) explore fluid dynamics in QCD phase transitions, stochastic models of critical phenomena, and confinement mechanisms. Awards include his distinguished professorship title. Schäfer has collaborated with institutions like Brookhaven National Lab and has advised students across postdoctoral and faculty roles.
