Thomas Römer serves as the Chairman of The Hebrew Bible and its Contexts at the Collège de France. He was recently reappointed to this prestigious position as announced on August 18, 2025, and maintains an active academic schedule with numerous lectures planned throughout 2026 across multiple institutions.
Römer's research challenges traditional documentary models of biblical scholarship, proposing that the Pentateuch originated from the Exodus narrative, which was first written in the 7th century BC in the kingdom of Judah. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining philological, historical, and archaeological studies, and has strengthened collaborations with Tel Aviv University's archaeology department. In France, where he notes that biblical studies are 'unfortunately not very developed, due to a certain understanding of secularism,' his work represents a significant contribution to European biblical scholarship.
His current academic activities include a multi-part lecture series examining the origins of the Israelite monarchy (Saul, David, and Solomon) and political power dynamics in the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near East. These topics form part of his broader three-year lecture course titled Birth of the Bible, which tests his hypothesis about the textual formation of biblical literature.
