Prof. Yosef Garfinkel serves as the Yigael Yadin Professor of Archaeology of the Land of Israel at the Institute of Archaeology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he has been head of the Institute since 2017.
His archaeological career demonstrates two distinct research phases:
- Early career focused on late prehistory of the Levant, particularly Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods through excavations at Yiftahel, Gesher, Tel Ali, Shaar Hagolan, Neolithic Ashkelon, and Tel Tsaf
- Since 2007, concentrated on early Kingdom of Judah (10th-9th centuries BCE) through excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, Socoh, Tel Lachish and Khirbet al-Rai
Garfinkel's research bridges archaeological evidence with biblical narratives, particularly regarding the historical context of early Israelite monarchy under David, Solomon, and Rehoboam.
His publications include the book Solomon's Temple and Palace: New Archaeological Discoveries and the significant article Reconstructing the Features of Solomon's Temple, which uses archaeological evidence from 10th century BCE Khirbet Qeiyafa and 9th century BCE Motza Temple to interpret the biblical description of Solomon's Temple.
