Thomas R. Cundari is a Regents Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas (UNT), where he joined the faculty in 2002 after 11 years at the University of Memphis. He serves as founder and director of UNT's Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Modeling (CASCaM), which has grown from two faculty members to over 100 researchers in under a decade, establishing UNT as an international leader in computational chemistry.
His educational background includes:
- B.S. from Pace University (1986)
- Ph.D. from the University of Florida (1990)
- Postdoctoral fellowship at North Dakota State University (1990-1991)
Dr. Cundari's research pioneers high-accuracy computational methods for modeling transition metals, with core expertise in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. His work drives rational design of metal-based catalysts, sensors, and advanced materials through computer-aided catalyst design and biological informatics. Key focus areas include copper/zinc-triad chemistry, transition metal multiple bonding, enzyme modeling, and AI integration for catalyst development.
He has published over 340 peer-reviewed papers and received UNT's Eminent Faculty Award for his 26-year career impact, including 110+ invited seminars and editorial board service for Polyhedron.
Through the Cundari Research Group, he has mentored numerous students whose alumni now hold research positions at national laboratories, industry leaders, and academic institutions. His leadership in CASCaM demonstrates sustained success in securing research funding and building collaborative scientific infrastructure.
The Cundari Research Group and CASCaM form an integrated ecosystem of 100+ researchers advancing computational chemistry through interdisciplinary projects in catalysis, materials science, and enzyme modeling, with emphasis on practical applications for industrial and biomedical challenges.
