Thomas Poole is a Professor of Law at the LSE Law School, London School of Economics and Political Science. He joined LSE in 2006 and has held his current academic rank since 2015. His expertise includes UK constitutional and administrative law, legal and political theory, foreign relations law, constitutional history, law and empire, and the history of political thought. He has authored Reason of State: Law, Prerogative and Empire (2015) and co-edited major volumes on Hobbes, Oakeshott, Hayek, and constitutional theory.
He serves as General Editor of the Modern Law Review and Cambridge Studies in Constitutional Law, and sits on editorial boards for Public Law Review, Human Rights Law Review, and NILS UK Law Review. Tom has held visiting appointments at institutions including University of New South Wales, European University Institute, Melbourne University, University of Toronto, Princeton University, Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas, Auckland University, and University of Western Australia.
His research explores intersections between legal frameworks, state power, historical contexts, and imperial legacies in constitutional development. The visiting positions across multiple continents reflect his international scholarly influence and collaborative academic networks.
