Dr. Thomas Pickles is an Associate Professor of Early Medieval History at the University of Chester, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds roles as Research Coordinator for History and Programme Leader for the MRes in History. His interdisciplinary research focuses on religious belief and practices in the early Middle Ages, combining textual, material, and linguistic analyses. He is General Editor for the Brepols series Studies in the Early Middle Ages, and chairs the Chester Archaeological Society. He leads the UKRI AHRC-funded project Early Christian Churches and Landscapes (ECCLES), collaboratively creating a public web resource for churches in Britain and Ireland. Dr. Pickles teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on early and high medieval topics, including the Crusades, Viking diaspora, and Norman Conquest. His notable publications include Kingship, Society, and the Church in Anglo-Saxon Yorkshire (2018) and ongoing research on Whitby Abbey's history.

Research Interests: Social and cultural analysis of religious practices in early medieval Europe, interdisciplinary approaches to medieval history, church-building processes, and the historical significance of Whitby Abbey. His funded projects emphasize public engagement and resource creation for stakeholders in heritage, education, and infrastructure.
Professional Activities: Editorial roles, advisory board memberships (e.g., Northern History), and leadership in academic societies. He has supervised numerous MRes and PhD students, integrating real-world heritage projects into teaching through modules like History at Work.
