Thomas Ortmeyer is a Research Professor at Clarkson University's Coulter School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and the Center for Electric Power System Research (CEPSR). He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University (1980, 1977, 1972). His career spans over four decades, including roles as Department Chair (2001–2010), Professor (1992–2018), and visiting positions at the University of Canterbury (2009), Kumamoto University (1993–1994), and Electric Power Research Institute (2007).
His research focuses on power systems, renewable energy integration, grid resilience, and energy storage. Notable projects include National Science Foundation grants on resilient carbon-free grids, NYSERDA-funded studies on offshore wind integration, and DOE initiatives on AI-driven grid forecasting. He has co-authored numerous publications on microgrid design, inverter control, and energy storage systems.
Ortmeyer has collaborated extensively with industry partners like New York Power Authority, GE Energy, and Intelligent NRG Solutions. His teaching includes courses on power systems, electric machines, and protective relaying. As Director of CEPSR, he leads interdisciplinary efforts to advance sustainable energy infrastructure.
