Thomas O'Mahoney is a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering's Life Sciences School. His research focuses on evolutionary anatomy, embryology, forensic anthropology, and advanced imaging techniques. He leads the Developmental Anatomy and Imaging lab group, utilizing the School's specialized facilities. O’Mahoney holds a PhD in Environmental Biology from the University of Manchester, an MSc in Palaeoanthropology from University College London, and a BA in Archaeology from the University of Bristol.
His research combines 3D imaging, machine learning, and morphometrics to study human and animal anatomy with applications in biomedical and forensic sciences. Key projects include the 'Evolution of Language' study analyzing laryngeal anatomy and the 'Fetal Bone Measurements Dataset' project. He oversees 3D imaging work packages and manages the Harrison Mammalian Larynx Collection.
Teaching responsibilities include module leadership for Forensic Anthropology and Preparation for Research, contributing to courses in Forensic Pathology and Developmental Biology. He has secured research grants including £10,000 for 3D imaging enhancement (2021) and an Erasmus+ exchange to Amsterdam (2020). Active in academic service, he reviews for high-impact journals and advises institutions like the Turkana Basin Institute.
Recent presentations include analyses of fetal scapula growth at BABAO conferences and invited lectures on primate vocal tract evolution. His work bridges paleoanthropology, developmental biology, and computational methods, with a focus on ethical applications of 3D imaging in cultural heritage and forensic contexts.
