Thomas Norton Denny is a Professor in Medicine and Research Professor of Global Health at Duke University School of Medicine. He serves as the Chief Operating Officer of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) and the Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI), and is an Affiliate Member of the Duke Global Health Institute. Additionally, he holds the position of Associate Dean for Duke Research and Discovery @RTP.
Dr. Denny earned an M.Sc in Molecular and Biomedical Immunology from the University of East London and a degree in Medical Law (M.Phil) from the University of Glasgow. He completed strategic management training at The Wharton School and biomedical research management at Harvard School of Public Health. In December 2005, he was inducted as a Fellow into the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
His research focuses on infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS and emerging infectious diseases like SARS-CoV-2. Dr. Denny's work spans vaccine development, immunological assay standardization, and quality assurance in laboratory testing for clinical trials. His expertise in molecular immunology has led to significant contributions in developing standardized laboratory tests used worldwide for HIV, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 research.
Dr. Denny's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and immunity, HIV vaccine development, and standardization of immunological assays. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in developing vaccines and diagnostics for global health threats, with emphasis on broadly neutralizing antibodies and computational vaccine design approaches.
- Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow (2002-2003)
- Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (inducted December 2005)
- Named one of the top health care COOs in the country
As Chief Operating Officer of DHVI, Dr. Denny oversees an NIH portfolio exceeding $65 million and leads a $120 million enterprise focused on vaccine research. He spearheaded Duke's successful COVID-19 campus surveillance testing program during the pandemic, processing over 30,000 samples weekly using innovative robotic processing for pool technology. His lab standardizes laboratory tests used worldwide to support clinical research.
Dr. Denny leads the Immunology Virology Quality Assessment Center (IVQAC), which includes the External Quality Assurance Program Oversight Laboratory (EQAPOL), the Immunology Quality Assessment (IQA) program, and the Non-human Primate Core Virology Laboratory. The IVQAC serves over 200 sites worldwide, ensuring quality and consistency in immunological laboratories participating in HIV/AIDS therapeutic, vaccine, and prevention investigations. The IVQAC is a GCLP laboratory accredited by CAP, CLIA and ISO-17043.
