Dr. Thomas Nikolai is a Senior Turfgrass Academic Specialist at Michigan State University, affiliated with the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. His research focuses on golf course putting green mechanical and cultural practices, particularly lightweight rolling and its effects on turfgrass health and customer satisfaction. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, trade articles, and a book on green speed management.
His educational background includes extensive research in turfgrass physiology, with emphasis on fertilizer management, disease suppression, and environmental sustainability. Dr. Nikolai teaches courses such as AT 102 Turf & Landscape Analytical Practices and CSS 178 Turfgrass Irrigation, integrating practical field applications with theoretical concepts.
Research interests span green speed optimization, pesticide reduction, and integrated pest management. His work demonstrates how cultural practices like rolling can enhance surface quality while reducing chemical inputs. Key findings include the role of lightweight rolling in mitigating dollar spot disease and improving green smoothness.
Dr. Nikolai has presented globally at conferences in Europe, Asia, and Australia, emphasizing sustainable practices and the economic/environmental impact of turfgrass. His international engagements highlight Michigan State’s leadership in applied turfgrass research.
