Dr. Thomas Murphy is a Career Development Fellow in French at New College, University of Oxford. His academic background includes a BA from Austin Peay State University, followed by MA, MPhil, and PhD in French Literature from New York University. He has held fellowships at the École normale supérieure (Paris) and Sorbonne Université. His teaching focuses on early modern French literature, medieval texts, and translation studies.
Research interests center on intersections of pre-modern scientific thought and humanistic traditions, particularly in early modern France. His first book project examines evolving concepts of 'nature' in French, Latin, and Greek during the 16th century through philological case studies. The second explores originality in Renaissance translation theory.
Key awards include the Georges Lurcy Trust fellowship (2021-2022). Recent publications include contributions to Albineana (2023) and Fabula-LhT (2023), analyzing lexicography and cultural history.
Prior roles include teaching Latin at CUNY/Brooklyn College’s Latin/Greek Institute and collaborative research at Princeton, Sorbonne, and EHESS.
