Nicholas Devlin is Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. He holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Comparative Literature from The Graduate Center, CUNY, and a B.A. in Ancient Greek Language and Literature & Comparative Literature from Oberlin College.
His research examines the English reception of Greek and Latin materials in early modern historical writing, political theory, drama, and poetry. He focuses on how early modern writers adapted tragic forms to address political and religious crises, particularly between the French Wars of Religion and the regicide of Charles I. Current work investigates tragedy as a rhetorical structure for historical narration and explores how English and Neo-Latin writers engaged with Aristotle and Greek tragedians to examine confessional identity.
His research has been supported by the American Trust for the British Library's Transatlantic Fellowship and various CUNY fellowships.
