Dr Thomas Molony serves as a Senior Lecturer in African Studies at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the School of Social and Political Science and the Centre of African Studies. Based in the Chrystal Macmillan Building, his work bridges academic research and practical policy engagement across Africa.
His research interests span African democracy, elections, governance, international relations, militaries, politics, and security, with specialized expertise in election observation and ICT impacts. Notable projects include the UKRI ESRC-funded Local Perceptions and Media Representation of Election Observation in Africa and pandemic-era election studies across multiple African nations.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals consistent focus on election integrity during crises, media representation of democratic processes, and digital technology's political implications. His work demonstrates methodological diversity across field research, policy analysis, and comparative case studies.
Molony actively supervises doctoral candidates, with 18 completed PhDs covering topics from conservation conflicts to electoral politics.
