Thomas Mitchell is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Ethics in AI and a Junior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on practical ethics, ethical theory, and epistemology, with specific interests in trust, the ethics of influence/persuasion, and philosophy of artificial intelligence. He holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Birmingham, a BPhil from Oxford (Linacre College), and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of St Andrews, where his thesis addressed the nature and rationality of trust and trustworthiness.
His recent publications explore the ethics of persuasive digital technologies and issues in online audience selection. Mitchell joined the Uehiro Oxford Institute (formerly the Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics) in 2022 before moving to his current role in 2025. He contributes to interdisciplinary debates on AI ethics and digital influence.
