Thomas Marois is a Professor of Political Economy and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Public Banking at McMaster University, Canada. Previously, he held a Reader position in Development Studies at SOAS University of London. His research focuses on public banking's role in financing green and just transitions, with particular attention to climate, water, and sustainable infrastructure. He is the author of the award-winning book *Public Banks: Decarbonisation, Definancialisation, and Democratisation* (2021) and co-editor of *Public Banks and Public Water in the Global South* (2024).
Marois leads the Public Banking Project at McMaster and advises organizations like the Public Banking Institute and UNCTAD. He has held roles such as Associate Director of the Municipal Services Project and sits on international advisory boards like the Council of Europe Development Bank Award for Social Cohesion Jury. His work bridges academia and policy, emphasizing public alternatives to neoliberalism.
His research spans global political economy, public policy, and development finance. Notable contributions include analyzing public banks' impact on water infrastructure in conflict zones (e.g., Palestinian Territories) and their role during crises like the 2008 financial crash and the pandemic. Marois holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from York University and has authored over 30 scholarly works in top journals like *Review of Political Economy* and *Water International*.
Awards include the 2023 Joan Robinson Prize for his contributions to political economy. His recent work explores dynamic theories of public banks and their ability to foster equitable, climate-resilient systems globally.
