Thomas M. Schmidts is an Honorary Professor in the Department of LSE at the Technical University of Central Hesse, where he leads the Biopharmaceutical Technology Group (AG BPT). He maintains dual roles as both an academic researcher and industry executive, serving as Managing Partner of RSC Pharma GmbH & Co KG and Novigo GmbH & Co KG. His office is located at Gutfleischstr. 3-5 D12.2.04 in the User Center for Medical Technology.
His educational background includes:
- 2003-2006: Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Biopharmaceutical Technology from University of Applied Sciences Giessen Friedberg
- 2008-2013: Doctorate in Natural Sciences from Philipps University of Marburg
Schmidts specializes in pharmaceutical development with particular expertise in dosage forms, micro- and nanotechnology applications, and permeation testing on skin and nail models. His research group has developed innovative manufacturing processes using high-pressure homogenizers and membrane emulsification techniques. The AG BPT focuses on encapsulation of bitter extracts using cyclodextrins, development of nanoparticulate carrier systems, and creating novel drug delivery concepts for conditions like nail mycoses, inflammatory skin diseases, and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.
His scientific recognition includes:
- 2012 Honorary Plaque of the Association of German Engineers
- 2006 1st Diploma Prize of the Institute for Biopharmaceutical Technology
Schmidts has secured substantial research funding from multiple sources including ZIM/BMWi, HMWK LOEWE programs, BMBF, and ERDF Hessen. His 15+ funded projects since 2005 demonstrate expertise in translating research into practical medical applications, particularly in developing prototype devices for skin disease treatment, urine test strips, and innovative formulations for difficult-to-treat conditions. His dual industry-academic position enables rapid technology transfer from laboratory to commercial products.
The Biopharmaceutical Technology Group operates within the Institute of Biochemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology, maintaining close collaborations with industry partners including Dermatest GmbH, Biodermic GmbH, sterna biologicals GmbH, and Analyticon GmbH. The research facility includes specialized equipment for evaluating nanoparticulate carrier systems and conducting permeation tests on pig skin and nail models.
