Thomas LAPOLE is an Associate Professor at Université Jean Monnet in Saint-Étienne, France, where he is affiliated with the Inter-university Laboratory of Human Movement Biology (LIBM) and leads the [PAF] research team at the Saint-Étienne site. He obtained his PhD from the University of Amiens in 2009 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Compiègne before joining Saint-Étienne in 2012. He earned his HDR (Habilitation to Supervise Research) in 2018 and has held leadership roles including Dean of the Sport Science Department (2016–2018) and Vice-Dean of LIBM (since 2020).
His research focuses on neuromuscular plasticity, particularly in response to local vibration, neuromuscular fatigue, and muscle mechanical properties. He has demonstrated that local vibration can modulate the central nervous system, leading to long-term neural adaptations and improved functional performance, with applications in clinical rehabilitation. His work extends to neuromuscular electrical stimulation and the use of shear wave elastography for assessing muscle stiffness.
The trends in his recent publications (2017–2024) reflect a strong emphasis on clinical and applied physiology, particularly in critical care recovery, ICU-acquired weakness, post-COVID fatigue, and field-based fatigue measurement. His research bridges basic science with practical applications in rehabilitation and sports performance.
Scientific awards received include:
- 3 personal scientific awards
- 4 awards for his supervised students
Thomas LAPOLE has secured over €662,000 in research funding and has authored or co-authored 45 journal articles, with a high proportion in top authorship positions. He actively supervises students and contributes to advancing knowledge in neuromuscular physiology. He is a key member of the [PAF] research team within the LIBM, a collaborative inter-university laboratory focused on human movement biology.
