Thomas L. Szabo is a Research Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, with a secondary appointment in Mechanical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Bath, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia.
His research focuses on advancing medical imaging technologies, particularly in diagnostic ultrasound, viscoelastic tissue characterization, and therapeutic ultrasound applications. Key areas include elastography, nonlinear acoustics, and the development of international standards for high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). He has authored influential textbooks such as Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging: Inside Out and contributed to standards via the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
Recent work spans brain imaging, neuromodulation via ultrasound, and geophysical imaging techniques. His publications reflect interdisciplinary expertise in biomedical engineering, acoustics, and materials science.
Dr. Szabo’s lab develops innovative imaging systems and collaborates on transducer design, signal processing, and clinical applications. He emphasizes education through interactive simulators and curriculum design for biomedical engineering students.
