Thomas L. Loebel is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at York University, where he also served as former Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. He holds a PhD in American Literature from SUNY Buffalo (1996), along with MA degrees in Literary Theory (SUNY Buffalo), Curriculum Studies (University of Toronto), and a BA in Political Science/Philosophy from McGill University.
Research Interests: His work focuses on 19th- and 20th-century American literature, literary theory, psychoanalysis, and continental philosophy. Current projects include studies on vocal color and national identity, object relations in Henry James, and pre-consciousness in Dickinson, Ellison, and Kushner.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of the John Charles Polanyi Prize (1998-99), SSHRCC Doctoral Fellowship (1992-94), and grants totaling over $50,000 for research on American prose poetics. His book The Letter and the Spirit of Nineteenth-Century American Literature (2005) remains a key contribution to the field.
Teaching & Service: Directed undergraduate studies in English, taught courses ranging from American literature to gender studies, and supervised numerous graduate theses. Active in curriculum development, including high school-university pedagogy initiatives and digital humanities projects at the University of Calgary.
Professional Contributions: Published in Arizona Quarterly, CR: The New Centennial Review, and co-translated Levinas interviews for Is it Righteous to Be? (2002). Served on York University committees including Senate Admissions and SCARSA appeals.
