Thomas Koenigs is an Associate Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English at Scripps College. He also coordinates the American Studies Program. His research focuses on 18th- and 19th-century American literature, particularly prose fiction and the novel's role in addressing political discourse, gender, and slavery. Koenigs holds a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and M.A./Ph.D. from Yale University.
His first book, Founded in Fiction: The Uses of Fiction in the Early United States (2021), challenges traditional narratives of the novel’s rise by examining how fiction shaped political, gendered, and social issues. Current projects explore early US writers’ approaches to representing interiority and democracy.
Teaching highlights include courses on American literature, slave narratives, and modernism. He has received multiple Mary W. Johnson Faculty Achievement Awards for teaching (2014-15, 2018-19) and research (2015-16, 2019-2020). His articles appear in journals like American Literary History and Early American Literature.
His work trends toward redefining fictionality’s historical significance and its intersections with democracy, gender, and slavery. Collaborations include co-editing a special journal issue on “Early American Fictionality.”
