Thomas Jayne is a University Foundation Professor and Co-Director of the Alliance for African Partnership at Michigan State University (MSU), within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He specializes in agricultural economics and African development, focusing on policy analysis, institutional capacity building, and rural transformation. Jayne’s career spans over three decades, marked by impactful scholarship and contributions to international development. Notably, he was honored as a Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) in 2018, recognizing his extensive work in agricultural economics and African policy research.
His research integrates scholarship, mentoring, and policy engagement, with a focus on how political decisions affect rural communities in Africa. Jayne has held leadership roles, including Co-Director of MSU’s Alliance for African Partnership and Chair of CGIAR’s Policies, Institutions and Markets program. He has mentored dozens of African professionals and strengthened MSU’s collaborations with African institutions. Awards include the 2017 Bruce Gardner Memorial Prize and multiple research excellence accolades.
Jayne’s career began with Peace Corps service in Ghana, leading to a PhD from MSU and a 28-year tenure there, despite periods in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Rome. He emphasizes the importance of non-tenure track faculty support and advocates for equitable opportunities in academia.
