Thomas J. Ferraro is a Professor of English at Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, holding positions since 2005. He is also a Bass Fellow (2018–present) and previously served as Director of Undergraduate Studies (2011–2014). His expertise spans American literature, film, and performing arts, with a focus on transgression, redemption, and cultural identity.
Education: Ph.D. (1988), M.A. (1983) from Yale University; B.A. (1979) from Amherst College.
Research interests include American fiction’s interplay of transgression and redemption, Italian-American cultural aesthetics, and the intersection of literature with film and music. His work analyzes figures like Emily Dickinson, Edward Hopper, and Nina Simone, exploring themes of ethnicity, religion, and narrative structure.
Recent publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to American literature, including analyses of 20th-century narratives and Italianate influences. His 2020 book Transgression & Redemption in American Fiction redefines modern American literary archetypes.
