Thomas J. Dean is a Professor at Colorado State University's College of Business, Department of Management, and holds the Tinberg Business for a Better World University Professor chair. He has led nationally recognized entrepreneurship and sustainable enterprise programs at the University of Tennessee, the University of Colorado, and Colorado State University, including a third-place national ranking in social entrepreneurship for CSU’s MBA program. He taught at the University of Colorado as Academic Director of the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship and co-founded the Sustainability, Ethics, and Entrepreneurship Conference.
Education:
- B.S. in Environmental Management from Penn State University
- M.B.A. from Oklahoma State University
- Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Colorado
His research focuses on business strategy, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunities tied to social and environmental trends. He pioneered environmental entrepreneurship courses, published the first sustainable venturing textbook, and advanced theories in sustainable entrepreneurship and property rights.

At the University of Colorado, he founded the Sustainable Venturing Initiative, Sustainable Opportunities Summit, and Cleantech Venture Challenge. At CSU, he developed the Impact MBA program, now in its 17th year. He owns a real estate and nursery business on his family’s third-generation Pennsylvania farm.
