Thomas Hywel Rhys is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Cardiff University's School of Engineering. He currently serves as Pro Vice-Chancellor (International and Engagement) and holds the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development. His academic career spans over four decades, including roles as Director of the Cardiff School of Engineering and Founder Director of the Geoenvironmental Research Centre.

Research Interests: Focuses on geotechnical engineering, including THMC analysis, nuclear waste disposal, sustainable geoenvironmental systems, and ground energy solutions. He pioneered numerical modeling for unsaturated soils and contributed to high-performance computing applications in geoscience.
Leadership Roles: Led international initiatives like the IAEA Technical Committee on Nuclear Waste Disposal and advised UNIDO on POPs remediation. Served on EPSRC and Royal Academy of Engineering committees.
