Thomas Hickson is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Environment, & Society at the University of St. Thomas's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD in Geology and Environmental Science from Stanford University, an MA in Geography from University of Texas at Austin, and a BS in Geology and Environmental Studies from Cal State University, East Bay.
His research spans sediment transport, Earth surface processes, environmental geoscience, petroleum geology, and low-cost environmental monitoring techniques. Special interests include microbialite formation as evidence for early Earth/extraterrestrial life, tectonic-sedimentation relationships in the Lake Mead region, and lead detection in drinking water.
His recent publications demonstrate strong focus on basin evolution, microbialite characterization, and innovative field methodologies. Research trends show integration of paleoenvironmental reconstruction with modern resource management challenges, particularly in lithium exploration and groundwater monitoring.
He teaches courses including Environmental Geology, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Advanced Field Geology, and Theology and the Environment. Current courses include Environmental Geology lectures and labs, and Soils, Science and Society.
