Thomas Hawke is a Professor in the Department of Pathology & Molecular Medicine at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences. He leads the Hawke Lab, which focuses on skeletal muscle research, investigating how skeletal muscle maintains metabolic function and physical capacities in response to various stressors including exercise, disease, and pharmacological interventions.
Dr. Hawke completed his H.B.Sc. (1989-1994), M.Sc. (1994-1996), and Ph.D. (1996-2000) at the University of Guelph, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (2000-2003).
- His research spans from fundamental muscle biology to clinical applications
- He has established himself as a leader in understanding diabetic myopathy
- His work bridges basic science with translational medical applications
Dr. Hawke's research primarily focuses on skeletal muscle physiology and its responses to various conditions. His work has significant implications for understanding and treating metabolic disorders, particularly diabetes.
- He has published extensively on the impact of statin therapy on skeletal muscle, providing novel mechanisms for statin-induced muscle pain
- His lab has demonstrated structural, metabolic, and functional alterations in the muscles of individuals with Type 1 Diabetes
- Notably, his team was the first to show gender-specific differences in how muscles respond to Type 1 Diabetes
- More recently, he has explored applications of muscle stem cell research for the cultivated meat industry
Analysis of Dr. Hawke's recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong focus on muscle metabolism in diabetic conditions, muscular dystrophy models, and mitochondrial function. His work consistently bridges basic science with potential clinical applications, particularly in understanding diabetic myopathy and developing targeted exercise interventions. The research shows increasing emphasis on mitochondrial function, gender differences in muscle responses, and novel therapeutic approaches for muscle-related complications of metabolic diseases.
Dr. Hawke's research is generously supported by multiple funding agencies including NSERC, CFI, CIHR, NFRF, and Genome Canada, as well as industry partners. His work has significant implications for clinical practice and therapeutic development in metabolic and neuromuscular disorders. His lab has trained numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.
The Hawke Lab at McMaster maintains an active research program with multiple ongoing projects examining skeletal muscle responses to metabolic stress, disease conditions, and therapeutic interventions. The lab utilizes a range of techniques from molecular biology to whole-animal physiology to address fundamental questions about muscle function and adaptation.
