Thomas Hale is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of African, French, and Comparative Literature at The Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Department of French and Francophone Studies within the College of the Liberal Arts. He served as Department Head from 2001 to 2008. His research focuses on African literature, oral traditions, Caribbean literature, and francophonie.
Education: Ph.D. in African, French, and Comparative Literature from the University of Rochester (1974).
Research Contributions: Hale pioneered studies in African literature, co-founding the African Literature Association. His work includes analyzing oral traditions in West Africa through griots' epics, and exploring Martinican author Aimé Césaire. Key publications cover topics like griots' cultural heritage, women's voices in West Africa, and comparative literature.
Awards & Grants:Recipient of the W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Award (1995) for advancing Penn State's international mission. Secured grants from the Fulbright program, National Endowment for the Humanities, U.S. Department of Education, and U.S. Information Agency.
