Professor Karim Sagna is a faculty member in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at Earlham College, contributing to interdisciplinary programs in Languages & Cultures and African and African American Studies. A native of Senegal, his teaching and research focus on French language, African and Caribbean Francophone literature, film, and oral traditions. He actively engages with professional organizations such as the African Literature Association (ALA) and the Mande Studies Association (MANSA), and has led numerous off-campus academic programs in Senegal, France, Ghana, Martinique, and Haiti.
Dr. Sagna holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, an M.A. from the University of Kansas, and a Maîtrise from Université de Dakar, Senegal. His scholarly work emphasizes African oral literature, particularly Mandinka griot art, and the intersection of tradition and modernity in cultural expression. He has conducted research on Mandinka oral poetry from Senegal and The Gambia, analyzing themes of identity, memory, and cultural heritage.
His off-campus leadership includes serving as a faculty leader for Earlham's programs in France, Ghana, Martinique, and Senegal, as well as Haiti. He has also co-developed a Mellon Foundation-funded project using video resources to teach language and culture. His academic contributions span multiple disciplines, reflecting his commitment to cross-cultural understanding and pedagogical innovation.
