Thomas Gregory Porcello is a Professor of Anthropology and Dean of Studies at Vassar College. He has held roles as Director of Media Studies and Co-Director of the Media Studies Development Project. He specializes in linguistic anthropology and ethnomusicology, with research focusing on sound recording studios, technological practices in music production, and the intersections of sound and culture.

His research explores how technological and discursive practices shape popular music production. Notable works include Wired for Sound (2005), which earned a Society for Ethnomusicology book prize, and Re-Making Sound (2023), co-authored with Justin Patch. Recent projects investigate the acoustic differences between live and recorded baseball sounds.
