Mr. Thomas Gavin is a Stipendary Lecturer in Ancient History at Brasenose College and St Anne's College, University of Oxford. He holds a BA from St Anne’s College (2019), an MPhil from University College (supported by a Clarendon Scholarship), and is completing a DPhil in Ancient History at Wolfson College (expected 2025), supported by the Lorne Thyssen Scholarship.
His research focuses on inter-city cooperation in Roman imperial-era Western Asia Minor, exploring discourses of concord and their impact on political behavior. Wider interests include civic life in post-Classical Greek cities, the role of the demos, and the interplay between urban environments and civic institutions.
Teaching responsibilities include organizing undergraduate instruction in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology, with a specialization in Roman history from the Middle Republic to 312 CE. His recent publications address ancient medical rhetoric and Roman epigraphy.
Awards include the Clarendon Scholarship and Lorne Thyssen Scholarship. He advises students across Classics, Ancient and Modern History, and Classical Archaeology programs.
