Prof. Dr. Thomas G. Schulze is a Chair of Psychiatric Phenomics and Genomics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich's Institute for Psychiatric Phenomics and Genomics (IPPG), holding this position since 2014. Previously, he led research at the University Medical Center of Georg August University of Göttingen and institutions in the USA. His work focuses on genetic and environmental interactions in mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression, emphasizing personalized treatment strategies.
Education: Studied human medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Barcelona, and the USA, completing his doctorate in Erlangen (1997). His research has established large patient cohorts for genetic studies, particularly exploring overlaps between psychiatric diseases. He leads international consortia, including the Bipolar Disorder Genome Study (BiGS) and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.
Professional Affiliations: Member of Germany's National Genome Research Network (NGFN), Past President of the American Psychopathological Association (APPA), President of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (ISPG), and Chairman of the Genetics Section of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), which awarded him honorary membership.
Research Contributions: Pioneered large-scale genetic cohort studies, investigating genetic similarities across mental disorders. Collaborates globally to advance genomic approaches in psychiatry.
