Thomas Fiedler

Thomas Fiedler is an Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle's School of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering Department). His research focuses on cellular materials, composite materials, and biomaterials, with applications in energy storage, thermal management, and tissue engineering. He leads projects on metallic foams for heat sinks and bioactive implants, collaborating globally with institutions in Germany, Portugal, Slovenia, and Brazil.

Education: PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universidade de Aveiro (Portugal, 2007), Master's from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany, 2004). Postdoctoral research at the University of Newcastle from 2008. Awards include multiple Pro-Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Research Excellence and the 2009 Vice Chancellor's Researcher of the Year.

Research spans experimental and computational mechanics, with expertise in Finite Element Methods and Lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Key collaborations include work on phase-change materials (PCMs) with Prof. Aldo Boccaccini and development of syntactic foams with expanded perlite and cork. His work addresses sustainability, energy efficiency, and industrial applications.
