Thomas Drennen is Professor of Business Management and Entrepreneurship and holds the Stine Family Endowed Chair at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He is a leading scholar in energy economics and climate change policy, with a strong affiliation in the Economics department and contributions to Environmental Studies. He earned his Ph.D. in Resource Economics from Cornell University in 1993 and has been a core faculty member since joining HWS in 1997.

Dr. Drennen's research centers on energy use, climate change, and environmental policy, with a special focus on U.S. and Chinese energy systems. His work spans nuclear power economics, hydrogen as an energy source, electricity production costs, and sustainability education. He has published extensively in top journals such as Science, Energy Policy, and the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment.
His recent publications reflect a consistent trajectory in energy systems modeling, climate policy analysis, and sustainable technologies. Themes include vehicle-to-grid energy storage, solid-state lighting adoption, alternative liquid fuels, and large-scale modeling of U.S. and global energy and greenhouse gas systems. His work often bridges technical analysis with economic and policy implications.

He is actively involved in energy research and policy analysis, leading simulation models and collaborating on interdisciplinary projects related to energy transition and climate resilience.
