Thomas Dietz is a University Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Environmental Science and Policy at Michigan State University (MSU), serving as assistant vice president for environmental research. He holds a PhD in Ecology from UC Davis and a bachelor's from Kent State University. His roles include founding director of MSU's Environmental Science and Policy Program, associate dean across multiple colleges, and leadership in National Research Council committees.
His research focuses on human-environment interactions, environmental values, and science-policy interfaces. Key interests include climate policy, sustainability science, and the societal dimensions of global environmental change. He has authored/co-authored over 110 peer-reviewed articles and 12 books, earning awards like the Sustainability Science Award and recognition from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dietz's work bridges social, natural, and policy sciences, emphasizing participatory governance and equitable solutions. He actively contributes to the Society for Human Ecology and the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at MSU.
