Thomas D Looser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at New York University’s College of Arts and Science. His research focuses on Cultural Anthropology, Japanese Studies, Critical Theory, New Media and Animation, and Art, Architecture and Urban Form. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (1999). His work explores intersections between aesthetics, politics, and history in Japanese contexts, as seen in his book Visioning Eternity: Aesthetics, Politics, and History in the Early Modern Noh Theater (Cornell University Press, 2010).
Recent publications include chapters on Japanese popular culture, urban anthropology, and media studies. These works analyze themes like animation’s cultural impact, urban spatial dynamics, and transnational diasporic identities. His research bridges critical theory with empirical studies of media, art, and urban form.
