Thomas Crowther is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warwick's Philosophy Department, holding the title of Reader in Philosophy since 2013. He specializes in metaphysics, philosophy of mind, epistemology, and the philosophy of Aristotle. His research explores temporal ontology, the metaphysics of mass and stuff, the philosophy of perception and agency, and states of consciousness such as wakefulness and dreaming. He collaborates with Professor Matthew Soteriou on interdisciplinary projects linking consciousness studies with sleep science. Crowther has taught at the University of Oxford, Birkbeck, and Heythrop College, University of London, and holds a PhD from King's College London under supervisors Mark Sainsbury and Jim Hopkins.
His research projects include a book on the interplay between persistence of substances, process activities, and the present, aiming to unify these concepts within metaphysical theory. Recent work with Soteriou emphasizes the philosophical significance of wakeful consciousness for understanding mind, action, and epistemology. Teaching includes undergraduate modules like Metaphysics and Aristotle's works, and postgraduate seminars on advanced metaphysics and epistemology.
Key publications include Perceptual Ephemera (co-edited with Clare Mac Cumhaill) and papers on temporal ontology, perceptual experience, and the philosophy of sleep. His work bridges Aristotelian metaphysics with contemporary issues in consciousness and agency studies.
