Michail Peramatzis is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of Oxford's Philosophy Faculty and a Hinton Clarendon Fellow at Worcester College. He specializes in Ancient Philosophy, particularly Aristotle's Metaphysics and theoretical frameworks, alongside broader metaphysical inquiries.
Education:
- 2002–2006: DPhil in Philosophy, Christ Church, University of Oxford
- 1998–2000: MSt in Philosophy & History of Science & Technology, University of Athens
- 1993–1997: BA in Classics & Philosophy, University of Athens
Research interests center on Aristotle’s metaphysical systems, including hylomorphism, essence and substance theory, and the interplay between metaphysics and science. He explores Plato’s epistemological and ontological concepts, particularly in the Sophist and Theaetetus. His work emphasizes textual analysis and methodological rigor in interpreting ancient philosophical texts.
Publications highlight a sustained focus on Aristotle’s Metaphysics, with key contributions analyzing priority, essence, unity, and the relationship between metaphysics and scientific inquiry. Collaborative projects include co-authoring The Metaphysics of the Metaphysics (forthcoming OUP) and editing Aristotelian Metaphysics: Essays in honour of David Charles.
Current research includes translating and commenting on Aristotle’s Metaphysics ΓΔΕ for the Clarendon Aristotle Series. He also engages in projects on Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics, Plato’s theory of truth-bearers, and the unity of metaphysical science.
