Professor Clark's research bridges early English and Old Norse poetry with contemporary rhetoric and public speaking. His academic work combines expertise in historical poetry with professional experience in speechwriting to analyze the poetic qualities of modern political language. He has published extensively on political speeches, particularly examining Australian Prime Ministers' rhetoric, Indigenous reconciliation discourse, and the intersection of poetry and political communication.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on how language shapes political narratives, with particular attention to speeches by figures like Paul Keating. Clark's research on racism reporting and Oscar ceremony analysis in 2025 shows his continued engagement with contemporary cultural and social issues through a rhetorical lens.
- Secretary of the Australasian Universities Language and Literature Association (AULLA)
- Vice-President of the International Federation for Modern Language and Literature (FILLM)
Professor Clark supervises research students in Language, Communication and Culture; Creative Arts and Writing; and Education. His funded research includes projects on non-Indigenous pathways to reconciliation in Australia and studies of attitudes toward Aboriginal reconciliation in Canada, reflecting his commitment to understanding cross-cultural communication and social justice issues.
