Thomas Christian Gasser

Thomas Christian Gasser is a Professor of Biomechanics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Denmark. He holds a Master of Mechanical Engineering (1997) and a PhD in Civil Engineering (2001) from Graz University of Technology, Austria, and a Habilitation in Solid Mechanics/Biomechanics from KTH (2008). His research focuses on computational biomechanics, particularly the development of numerical techniques for solving clinical and engineering problems in vascular systems. Key areas include abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture prediction, finite element method (FEM) simulations, and translational research leading to clinical decision-making tools like A4clinicsRE.

He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, two textbooks (including a German translation of Vascular Biomechanics), and holds patents in the field. Recognitions include the Humboldt Research Award (2022) and being ranked among the top 2% of global researchers in Biomedical Engineering. He organizes the Computational Tissue Biomechanics summer school and serves as an Associate Editor for International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering. Additionally, he founded ARTEC Diagnosis AB and VASCOPS GmbH, and acts as a legal expert for skiing accident reconstructions at Austria’s Oberlandesgericht.

Teaching responsibilities include courses on biomechanics, constitutive modeling, and applied elasticity. His work integrates theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches to address biological tissue mechanics challenges, emphasizing patient-specific analysis and clinical applicability.
