Thomas Boland is a Professor in the Department of Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program. He is renowned as the inventor of bioprinting, pioneering live-cell tissue printing and commercializing bioprinted medical products through his role as Chief Science Officer (CSO) of TeVido BioDevices LLC. His research focuses on applying engineering principles to create functional 3D biological structures, particularly in adipose tissue integration and vascularized implants.
Dr. Boland has received over $5.5M in research funding and numerous awards, including National Academy of Inventors Fellow recognition. His work has been featured on CNN and the Discovery Channel for innovations like bioprinted nipple areola complexes for breast cancer survivors. Key research areas include biomaterials, inkjet printing for medical applications, and tissue engineering. He holds patents related to bioprinting technologies and has authored over 70 publications.
His educational contributions include initiatives like BUILDing SCHOLARS to enhance diversity in biomedical research. He actively engages in community programs such as the Entrepreneurship Community of Practice and UTEP’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic through research and outreach.
