Dr. Thomas Boehm serves as the Ann Haskins Associate Professor of Special Education and Chair of the Department of Education at Wheaton College, while also directing the Wheaton Center for Faith and Disability and the Special Education Program. He holds a courtesy appointment as Associate Professor of Christian Formation and Ministry and founded the nonprofit Faith for ALL, which advances disability ministry in faith communities globally. His work centers on building inclusive communities that promote flourishing for people with and without disabilities through the integration of special education, family systems, and theological perspectives.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Special Education from Vanderbilt University (2017)
- M.Div. in Biblical Studies from Trinity International University (2000)
- M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University (1993)
- B.A. in Pre-Med and Psychology (Honors) from Vanderbilt University (1990)
Dr. Boehm's research explores the critical intersections of disability, family, and faith through three primary lenses: inclusive special education service delivery that fosters school-wide collaboration; family quality of life measurement and enhancement across the lifespan; and faith/religion/spirituality as catalysts for community inclusion. His scholarship uniquely bridges empirical disability research with theological frameworks, emphasizing 'relational depth for kingdom breadth' – the principle that authentic relationships drive transformative societal impact. He develops practical models for congregational inclusion and family support that honor neurodiversity while maintaining theological integrity.
His publication record (2013-2016) reveals consistent focus on family perspectives in disability experiences, congregational inclusion mechanisms, and strengths-based approaches for youth with disabilities. The research employs mixed-methods designs and emphasizes practical applications for educators, faith leaders, and families, with recurring themes of belonging, spiritual expression, and cross-sector collaboration.
Dr. Boehm currently leads two major initiatives: the 'Family Views on Quality of Life and Intellectual Disability' project and the $7 million Wheaton College Faith and Disability Think Tank partnership with Marklund Day School. As Department Chair, he oversees faculty development and curriculum innovation while mentoring students through research assistantships and special education practicums. His work receives support through foundation grants and institutional partnerships that bridge academic research with community implementation.
He directs the Wheaton Center for Faith and Disability as a hub for research, training, and community engagement, working closely with Faith for ALL to translate scholarly findings into practical resources for over 200 faith communities. The Center develops evidence-based disability ministry frameworks, hosts the Faith and Disability Think Tank, and creates accessible theological resources through initiatives like 'Scripture for ALL'.
